Review of Pyle PL71PHB Headrest LCD Set

There are a handful of different ways to get video in your car or truck, but the easiest is probably to just go with some type of headrest-mounted display like the Pyle PL71PHB Headrest LCD. This type of product is much easier to install than a ceiling-mounted display, and it's usually a cheaper and more satisfying option than upgrading to a video head unit, since it's easier for the passengers to view this type of display.

In the case of the PL71PHB, the passengers can even watch two different video programs, or play their own video games, on the different screens. There is some work involved, and there are also some drawbacks, but it's still one of the easiest and cheapest options out there.

Pyle PL71PHB Headrest LCD: The Bottom Line
If you're looking for a couple of headrest LCD screens, the Pyle PL71PHB will be a pleasant surprise. The price is right, the features are there, and the build quality is excellent. The units are better screens than they are headrests, and installation requires a little bit of wiring work, but these screens are a great buy if you're not looking for something that includes a built-in DVD player.
PL71PHB Pros

Units replace existing headrests for easy installation.
Each unit had two independent inputs.
    Compatible with IR headphones.
Each unit has its own remote.

PL71PHB Cons

  • Headrests don't fit all vehicles.
  • Headrests don't stay in position when tilted.
  • Power wires may be too short for some vehicles.

Pyle PL71PHB Headrest LCD Description and Specifications

  • Dual 7 inch TFT LCD screens embedded in "universal" headrests.
  • Includes remotes, a/v cables, and power wires.
  • Each unit includes its own speakers and IR transmitter, so they can be used with or without headphones.
 PL71PHB Cons

    No built-in DVD player.

    Headrests don't fit all vehicles.
Headrests don't stay in position when tilted.
Power wires may be too short for some vehicles.

Double Duty Headrest Displays

The Pyle PL71PHB LCD headrests are great little displays, but they aren't particularly good headrests. The build quality is excellent, but your existing headrests are probably more comfortable. Depending on your vehicle, you may even have to remove the screens and reinstall them in your existing headrests.

While Pyle bills these headrest displays as "universal," and they are technically adjustable, your personal experience will vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle. The way that they work is that you remove your existing headrests and install these instead. In order to accommodate a wide range of different vehicles, the bars that extend from the bottom of the headrests are adjustable. This allows them to slide seamlessly into most seats, but there are some applications where the bars simply won't spread far enough or contract in enough.

If you're unlucky enough to run into that type of situation, you will probably have to ditch the headrest component of these headrest displays. The actual displays will still work, but you'll end up having to cut into your existing headrests, or buy some aftermarket headrest replacements to install the screens in.

This is more work than you should really be expected to do for this type of product, but that kind of installation will typically result in more comfortable headrests that match the interior of your vehicle better.

As far as the actual screens are concerned, you'll be hard pressed to find anything better for the money. Each 7 inch display has a 16:9 aspect ratio, and the contrast ratio is high enough that the pictures are pretty clear in full daylight. It's also nice to have multiple inputs, which allows you to plug the units into a central in-dash DVD player, external DVD players, video game systems, or anything else.

It's important to note that you will absolutely need some type of external video source to get any use out of these displays. Each display is literally that: a display. Unlike headrest DVD players, these units do not include a build in DVD player or any other type of video source.

The installation is also a little more involved than some other headrest DVDs and LCD screens because the Pyle PL71HB doesn't include a 12 volt plug out of the box. The power wires have to be connected into your vehicle's electrical system, or you can splice them into a 12 volt plug, which can then be connected to your cigarette lighter or 12 volt accessory socket. So if you're not feeling up to some basic wiring, you'll need to look elsewhere.

How to Pair a Bluetooth Cell Phone with Your Car

1、Handsfree Calling with Bluetooth

Check Your Equipment For Bluetooth CompatibilityBluetooth is a wireless technology that allows the creation of secure local networks, which makes it perfect for short-range connections between devices like your phone and your car's head unit, or your phone and a hands-free Bluetooth car kit or headset.

The process of setting up a Bluetooth network is referred to as "pairing," because the network consists of just one "pair" of devices. Although it is often possible to pair one device to multiple other devices, each connection is secure and unique to one particular pair of devices.

In order to successfully pair a cell phone to a car stereo, both the phone and the head unit must be Bluetooth compatible.

Most infotainment systems offer Bluetooth connectivity, which allows for seamless handsfree calling. This same functionality is also offered by both aftermarket and OEM Bluetooth car stereos, and you can add it into older systems with a handsfree car kit.

In order to use your cellphone for handsfree calling, you'll need:

    a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone
a Bluetooth-enabled infotainment system or car audio system
the PIN number for your infotainment or audio system

Additionally, it can be helpful to have:

    phone mount
    12-volt charger

2、Verify That Your Phone Has Bluetooth, and Turn It On

Most Phones Have Bluetooth But Check First
The exact process of pairing a phone to a car audio system varies depending on the specific phone and the way the infotainment or audio system is set up. Most of these steps will translate in one way or another regardless of what type of phone you have, and the car you drive, but the first step, in any case, is to make sure that you're working with the right tools.

With that in mind, the first step to pairing a phone with a car stereo is to verify that your phone actually has Bluetooth.

You can go ahead and turn your phone on at this point unless it was already on since you'll have to either dive into the menus or dig out your owner's manual to verify that you have Bluetooth.

The symbol for Bluetooth looks like a pointy capital B overlayed with an X. If you're familiar with runes, it's actually a bind rune made up of "hagall" and "bjarkan," owing to the Scandinavian origin of the technology. If you see this symbol anywhere in the status area of your phone or the menus, then your phone probably has Bluetooth.

While you're going through the menus to make sure you have Bluetooth, you'll also want to make note of where the "make phone discoverable" and "search for devices" options are since you'll need those in a little while. Most phones will only remain discoverable for a couple of minutes, though, so you don't actually have to activate that yet.

If your head unit or phone doesn't have Bluetooth, there are other ways to get Bluetooth in your car.

3、 Infotainment or Audio System Phone Settings

Get Your Car Ready to Pair
Some vehicles have a button that you can press to start the pairing process, and others allow you to simply say a voice command, such as "pair Bluetooth." Others are a little more complicated, in that they require you to navigate through the infotainment system. In this case, the next step is to navigate to the telephone settings in the infotainment system menu.
If you can't find a "pair Bluetooth" button, and your car doesn't support voice commands, you may need to dig out the owner's manual to find out exactly how to get your infotainment system or car stereo in the mood to pair.

4、Search for Your Phone or Set the System to Discoverable

Pair Your Cell Phone and Car

This is the step where you'll need to know where your "set to discoverable" and "search for devices" options are on your phone. Depending on how your audio or infotainment system is set up, either your car will be searching for your cell phone, or the cell phone will be searching for your car. In either case, both devices will have to be ready to search or ready to be found within the same window of two minutes or so.
In this case, we navigate to "Bluetooth" in the infotainment system phone settings menu in order to get the ball rolling. Your infotainment system or Bluetooth car stereo may be a little different in the particulars, but the basic idea should be the same.

5、Set to Discoverable or Scan for Devices

Now It's Up to Your Phone to Pair Successfully

After your car is either looking for your phone or ready to be found, you'll have to switch over to your phone. Since you're dealing with a limited amount of time to complete this step, it's a good idea to already have your phone in the correct menu. The exact steps, however, will depend on how your head unit works.

If the car is looking for your phone, you'll want to set your phone to "discoverable." This allows the car to ping your phone, find it, and pair up.

If your car's head unit itself is set to "discoverable," then you'll need to have your phone "scan for devices." This will allow it to look for any devices (including your car audio system, wireless keyboards, and other Bluetooth peripherals) in the area that is available for connection.

While you should be able to move along in the pairing process by either setting your phone to discoverable or having your phone search for devices, it may not work at first. This may be due to the time constraints, and one of the devices giving up before the other is ready to pair, so it's always a good idea to try a few times before throwing in the towel.

There are a number of other reasons that Bluetooth won't pair, from interference to total Bluetooth incompatibility, so don't give up if it doesn't work perfectly the first time.

6、 Select a Bluetooth Device to Pair

Find the Handsfree Device and Choose It

If your phone successfully finds your car's handsfree calling system, it will show up in the list of available devices. In this case, the Toyota Camry's handsfree calling system is simply called "hands-free" on the list.

After you select the device, you'll have to put in a passkey before you can successfully pair the devices. Each car comes with a preset passkey, which you can typically find in your user's manual. If you don't have the manual, you can typically set your own passkey from the phone settings menu in your infotainment system. And if that doesn't work, your local dealer may be able to provide you with the original passkey.
A lot of Bluetooth devices simply use "1234," "1111," and other simple passkeys by default.

7、 Success!
If you put in the right passkey, your phone should successfully pair with the handsfree calling system in your car. If it doesn't, then can repeat the steps you already took and make sure that you put the right passkey in. Since it's typically possible to change the default passkey, you may find that the default one doesn't work in some preowned vehicles. In that case, you can try pairing again after you've changed to passkey to something else.

8、Send and Receive Your Calls Hands-Free

  Test Your Handsfree Calling Setup

After you successfully pair your Bluetooth phone with your car, you can go ahead and make sure that everything is working properly. Depending on the specifics of your vehicle, you can go about that in a couple different ways. In the case of this Toyota Camry, there are buttons on the steering wheel that activate and shut down the handsfree calling mode. Calls can be placed by accessing the phone through the infotainment system touch screen.

Some vehicles have a single button that's used to activate all of the voice control functionality of the infotainment system. This same button will be used to place calls, set navigation waypoints, control the radio, and perform various other functions.

Other vehicles have always-on voice controls that activate when you issue certainly audible commands, and others have buttons that activate voice commands on external devices (like the Siri button in GM's Spark.)

Car Headrest DVD Players and Monitors

The main advantage of a headrest DVD player, compared to all the other ways you can watch DVDs in a car, is that they don't take up any space. Integrated units are also extremely easy to install since they come built into replacement headrests, and portable hang-on units are even easier to use. There is also room for a tremendous amount of customization with this type of system due to the fact that a headrest DVD player can often be used by itself or in conjunction with a fully featured in-car multimedia system.

Plug and Play Vs. Cut and Patch Vs. Hangers On

While there are literally hundreds of headrest DVD players on the market, they can all be broken down into three important categories. The first type is designed to be installed into an existing headrest. That involves cutting into the headrest to create a space for the DVD player, so installing one of these units isn’t for the faint of heart. They typically come with bezels that hide the cut headrest material, which makes a seamless installation possible.

The next type of headrest DVD player comes pre-installed in a replacement headrest. These units are typically available in a variety of colors, although it isn’t always possible to find a perfect match for the seat material. Most of these units are also adjustable, which allows them to be installed in a variety of different vehicles. The main issue is that while they are adjustable, most of these units don't offer 100 percent coverage.

That means there is a small chance that any given headrest replacement DVD unit won't fit your seats.

The last, and easiest to use, is the external, portable car headrest DVD player. These units are essentially just flatscreen DVD players that run on 12V. Some of these players include the necessary hardware to temporarily attach them to a headrest, and others require a third party holder or carrier.

The main benefit of this type of car headrest DVD player is that it is tremendously portable, while the main drawback is aesthetic in nature.

Self-Contained Vs. Integrated DVD Headrests

Regardless of whether a headrest DVD player is plug-and-play or not, some level of wiring is required. Since completely self-contained systems include an LCD screen, DVD player, and either speakers or an audio output, the only necessary wiring involves hooking up a power source.

Integrated headrest DVD players can be tied into other video and audio sources, so they require additional wiring. Some of these units can be hooked into a DVD head unit, which allows everyone in the vehicle to watch the same movie or TV show. Since they also include their own DVD players, each person can also choose to watch his or her own program.

Headrest DVD Player Bonus Features

The most important feature for a headrest DVD player to have is some type of headphone support.

Some units have an output jack that headphones can be hooked up to, and others offer some type of wireless functionality. The three main types of wireless headphones use Bluetooth, infrared, or RF to connect. Since these technologies aren’t compatible with each other, it’s important to buy the right type of in-car headphones after choosing a headrest DVD player.

Some headrest DVD players also include other bonus features like:

    built-in video games
    remote controls
    USB ports and card readers

Headrest LCDs

Headrest LDCs are a cheaper alternative to headrest DVD players. These units don’t include built-in DVD players, so they have to be hooked up to some type of external video source.

Some paired units include one DVD headrest and one DVD-less LCD headrest.

Alternatives to Headrest DVD Players

With the increasing popularity of iPads and other tablet computers, these highly portable devices have become a viable way to watch video content in a vehicle. While you can’t watch DVDs on a tablet, there are plenty of other ways to take your movies and TV shows on the road. With a tablet car mount and a wireless media server, the entertainment options are endless.
